There are a lot of experts today that are advising dog owners to put their pets on special diets so that they get extra nutrients. All owners know that this is definitely what happens when the conversation revolves around pedigree show dogs, as they usually have a special diet to ensure that they are in prime condition. But the question is; should we be giving special diets to our pets who are just normal domestic companions and are not show dogs?

Having grown up surrounded by dogs, I can truly say that my childhood would not have been the same without them. As a little girl, I was taught how to respect animals first hand. As I grew up, my dogs protected me. They looked after me. When I was upset, they shared in my sadness and provided me with a sympathetic ear to cry to and a warm and inviting body to cuddle up with. When I was happy, they shared in my joy, bounding about and grinning away. When they got old and sick, they taught me how to cope with death and how to learn about life.

A happy and healthy pet benefits from a good diet and plenty of exercise. When it comes to choosing the right dog food, for example, it’s always useful to read about other people’s experiences, particularly if they have the same size or breed of dog.

Having followed dog food reviews for quite a while now, it’s clear that whilst some are merely marketing exercises designed to promote a specific brand, and therefore not really useful as a guide, others are from independent sources, genuinely objective and eminently more helpful.

In the main, the most believable reviews are written by dog owners who have tested a variety of different food types, and the more reviews a brand receives helps to improve the accuracy of what is reported. [click to continue…]

Bathing a Dog TipsDoes your dog hate bath time? (For that matter, do you?) A little bit of strategy and patience can turn around this sometimes-dreaded ritual. Plus, you’ll get better results for your efforts. Your dog will be cleaner, smell nicer, and will maintain those fabulous looks!

Make your dog’s bathing spot a fun place to be. Or at least one she doesn’t hate. Start by simply bringing your dog into the bathroom and rewarding her with treats. On another day, just run the bath water and reward her. Work your way up to a full bath over time. Check out the ASPCA’s in-depth instructions for more guidance.

The Ultimate List of What Dogs Can Eat

Foods Dogs Can eatYou always hear about what dogs cannot eat – like chocolate, grapes, avocadoes, onions – but sometimes finding information on what dogs can eat is more difficult. Since dogs are so irresistibly cute, it’s easy for humans to fall prey to their pup’s sweet stare as he or she looks at you with those adorable eyes.

“Give me a bite, Mama?”

Since you’re only human (unless you’re a dog reading this), you’ve probably succumbed and given your dog a table scrap, or two. Most pet owners have a habit of feeding their dogs little bits of human food occasionally – maybe for a special occasion, like the holidays, or when your dog is sick.

But, what exactly can dogs eat? What human foods are safe for dogs?

Helpful Tip: Because not all dogs are alike, you may want to only give your dog a tiny nibble of your food. Your dog may be allergic, or have a negative reaction to it. He or she can have an upset tummy, diarrhea, or even throw up. So always start slow when introducing your human food to your dog.
